This module includes a general overview of building code occupancy classifications and their relationship to the Codes and Standards which apply to the installation of fire alarm systems.

After completing this module, you should be able to do the following:
  • Define the characteristics of building code occupancy classifications used to guide the installation of automatic fire alarm systems.
  • Read and interpret sections of the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Fire Code (IFC) that apply to the installation of fire alarm systems as mandated by building occupancy.
  • Explain how fire alarm and detection requirements differ depending on occupancy type.
